History
The Choral Project (TCP), founded in 1996 by Artistic Director Daniel Hughes, has earned an outstanding reputation for performing high-level choral literature and bridging the gap between text and music, and singer and spectator.
TCP’s exceptional artistry has taken it to prestigious stages worldwide, including renowned choral festivals where their performances have garnered critical acclaim. With a dedication to celebrating diverse traditions and pushing creative boundaries, The Choral Project is recognized for its technical excellence and innovative and emotionally compelling performances.
The Choral Project (TCP) has earned a series of extraordinary achievements over the years. By special invitation, TCP represented California at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, and secured 2nd place in the Mixed Choir competition at the prestigious Eisteddfod in Wales. At the California International Choral Festival, they took home 1st place in the Choir’s Choice category, along with two additional top-three honors. Noteworthy performances include Affair of the Art, featuring Bay Area native jazz musician Taylor Eigsti, and standing-room-only shows during their Northern Spain tour in the Basque Region.
TCP has also recorded Mona Lyn Reese’s Choose Life at the iconic Skywalker Sound and was featured on PBS with their rendition of “Famine Song” in The African American: Many Rivers to Cross. Sold-out collaborations with Canadian Brass, The King’s Singers, and renowned opera star Frederica von Stade further solidify their reputation for excellence. Their 2019 concert with Broadway legend Lisa Vroman was another triumph.
Committed to championing contemporary composers, TCP has premiered works by Eric William Barnum, Richard Burchard, Matthew Lyon Hazard, Brent Heisinger, Brian Holmes, Mac Huff, Theodore Lucas, Nico Muhly, Joshua Shank, Michael Touchi, Kim Wallace, and Stephen Schwartz. With ten albums, including The Cycle of Life, Of Christmastide, Americana, and Street Requiem, TCP’s signature blend of passion and precision is beautifully preserved. Audiences can experience this artistry firsthand through their recordings, available on most major streaming apps, where their vibrant sound continues to captivate listeners.
