Considering Matthew Shepard

Considering Matthew Shepard is a modern-day oratorio—told through music, poetry, and singing—that reflects on and responds to the devastating event that led to Matthew Shepard's heartbreaking death. But his life and legacy are more than his inhumane suffering and demise, and that too is compassionately explored in this groundbreaking work by Craig Hella Johnson.

This year marks 25 years since the murder of Matthew Wayne Shepard. He was a 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming, who was beaten and tortured for being gay and tied to a fence on the outskirts of Laramie, where he was left to die alone.

The Choral Project is proud to come together with the San José State University Choraliers to present this important piece, especially at a time in history when sympathy and understanding appear to be fading.

Join us for this extraordinary evening of music.
