In His Son’s Footsteps

How did you get started in choral singing?
When your mom directs the children's choir at church, there's not much choice! Then when I was 12, she appointed me pianist, which I refused, in vain.
Were you a music major in college?
Biology major, because everybody knows music is a great hobby, but a difficult career.
How did you hear about The Choral Project?
I first heard of the Choral Project when my son, Matt, who sang as a bass. Laurie and I traveled from Los Banos for a concert, and I was hooked.
What made you decide to audition for The Choral Project?
I seriously considered auditioning while living in Los Banos, but it was just too far. After retiring from high school science teaching and moving to Salinas, I gave it a shot.
Were you nervous? Was the audition what you expected it be?
Yes, I was nervous in spite of knowing I had the skills.
What is your favorite thing about singing with TCP?
The beautiful sound we produce! Even rehearsals are a joy for me, but concerts are the best.
Has The Choral Project met your expectations?
I was puzzled how an amateur group could reach such heights of precision, tone color, expression, pitch, and so on. Turns out it comes from large amounts of hard work by enthusiastic singers, with amazingly efficient rehearsals, but also includes substantial homework by the singers.
What hobbies do you have, or what do you like to do when you're not singing?
Hiking, which includes appreciating birds and plants. Also, travel to Spain and New Zealand, to visit our kids.
What is a fun or interesting fact that others might not know about you?
I love to play chamber music piano with friends.
